Why I Love Working on Stability (and Why You Might Too)

Strength is incredible. There’s something undeniably empowering about feeling your body grow stronger, more capable, and more resilient. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned through teaching and practicing movement, it’s this: true control doesn’t come from brute strength alone. It comes from stability.

Stability work is where the magic happens. It’s what gives strength its purpose, shape, and direction. It’s about engaging the deep, intrinsic muscles – the ones you can’t always see, but definitely feel. These muscles form the foundation of how we move, how we balance, and how we stay resilient, both in movement and in life.

When we focus on stability, we’re not just building a body that’s strong – we’re building one that’s coordinated, adaptable, and in control. We’re training the nervous system to communicate better with the body, to find center, and to respond to challenges with fluidity rather than tension. It’s about refining movement, not just powering through it.

And let’s be honest: stability challenges are fun. Whether it’s a shaky single-leg movement on the Reformer, a hover hold in barre, or a deep core activation series, there’s something so satisfying about that moment of “okay, I’ve got this.”

In the studio, I often see how stability work transforms people’s confidence – not just in their workouts, but in how they carry themselves day to day. It’s subtle, but powerful.

So next time you’re tempted to skip the slower, more controlled stuff, I encourage you to lean in instead.
